On Music, May performs upbeat and melancholy tunes with a mixture of soul and detachment. Particularly enjoyable are May’s clever, easily discerned reflections on college. Polite ode “College Town Boy” presents a sad, young intellectual who prefers to blame his rut on “something in the water here” rather than “something in the beer.” Another, “You Can’t Force a Dance Party,” is a foot-stomper avowing you can dance to a ukulele. For all the emotions contained in his lyrics, his delivery, in the sterile, eloquent tradition of Stephen Merritt, denies a sometimes vital level of recklessness, but preserves his sophistication. For instance, classy track “Meet Me in the Garden,” where May croons among monkey yelps and vogue synthesizers, merits a golden headset award reserved exclusively for smooth operators.
